Open Letter to the Union

March 19, 2009

From the outgoing Union Speaker:

http://www.dartmouthunion.com

Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen of the Union,

In accordance with the provisions of our great and duly ratified Constitution, my term as your Speaker ends within the hour: at noon today.  I want to thank you all for a wonderful term and for making my service so very enjoyable.  I could not have hoped for a better launch for the DPU, and I have you to thank for its initial success.

As you know, Brice D. L. Acree ’09 of the Liberals was elected as the 2nd Speaker of the Union and will lead us in the coming term.  I could not be more enthusiastic for his election and am eager to see what wonderful things he can lead us in accomplishing.

Brice and I have been in close contact discussing new ideas and programs for the Union.  These include outreach efforts, new debate events, reformed debate structure, and plans for social events.  I will leave the details for him to introduce, as I’m sure he will want to get your input and consideration.

I will be in the UK for the coming term, and will unfortunately not be able to actively participate in Union events.  This is for the best, as the Union will cease to be my “pet project” and will no doubt benefit from the influx of fresh ideas brought in with new leaders. I plan to join the Oxford Political Union while in Britain to see how other Unions function and to bring back their ideas to ours.  This discussion is premature, but I will remain active in the Union and if you should so privilege me, would like to serve again as your Speaker when I return in the fall.  In the meantime, I will monitor your activities with great interest.

To those who will be on campus next term: good luck.  To those who will be graduating: good-bye.

Nathan L. Bruschi ’10
Speaker of the Union

Hey all,

We’re having two social events this weekend, right before people head off for Spring Break.  Stop by for one or both!

-
1. Dunkin Donuts and Coffee Study Break
Swing by Morrison Commons on Friday, March 13 at 9:00 PM for free Dunkin Donuts and coffee!  Food is first-come, first-served, but the room will be open for socializing or studying from 9:00 until 11:00 PM.  Morrison Commons is located next to the Hinman Forum on the ground level of the Rockefeller Center (6000 Rockefeller Center; Hanover, NH).

-
2. The Union Jack Social
Members of the Union are invited to 204 Topliff on Saturday, March 14 at 10:00 PM.  Light snacks and drinks provided; bring a soda/juice with you if you have some Topside DBA left.  We’ll just hang out, get to know each other better, and sort out some things for next term.

Hey all,

I would like to address a few issues here.  I know it’s long and it’s finals period, but please just bear with me.  We just need to finish a couple of things before the end of term…

In this blitz: website, vote for resolutions, need ideas, need secretary

-
1. Website
We have launched our DPU website.  We will start publicizing it soon, probably over the break.  But please go check it out and suggest changes to me.  It was put together pretty quickly, and is not quite a finished product.  So if you notice something wrong, or see an opportunity to improve it, blitz me and we’ll get to work editing it!  A special thanks to Dan Thele who helped me in designing the site.

2. Vote for Spring 2009 Resolutions!
I have set-up an online poll for our next 5 resolutions.  Please go to the link below and vote for ALL resolutions that you would enjoy debating.  You may choose as many as you wish; just check any that you find compelling.  Please vote ASAP.  I will give it a week, and then will consider the results in selecting the docket for next term.  If you have suggestions of your own, send them along! Sorry about the formatting, btw, it is a little screwy.

3. Need ideas!
We need ideas on interesting/special events that we could hold next term.  I have a few that I’m considering that I’ll blitz out about later.  But if you have ideas – and I mean ANYTHING, be it serious or just fun ([water] pong anyone?), blitz me any time!

-
4. Need ideas! redux
We’re also looking for ideas for DPU promotion.  We need to get the word out about the DPU, and we could use more creative ways than just blitzing out.  Again, I have a few that I’ll blitz out in a few days.  But we still need lots more.  So blitz me!

-
5.  Secretary position
We need a secretary!  I have had one person showing interest, but if you would like it, blitz me and we’ll discuss.  I’ll announce a secretary by Saturday at noon.

To read the Secretary’s responsibilities, read Section 5.03 of the Constitution: http://www.dartmouthunion.com/documents/constitution.pdf

5.03    The Secretary of the Union will be responsible for keeping union minutes, recording debates, receiving petitions for membership by Parties and individuals, and overseeing the structure of the Union.  The Secretary may not hold the floor and shall be addressed as “Mr. (or Madam) Secretary”.

-

Phew… okay, thanks for pushing through all that.  Thanks for checking out the site AND for voting on new resolutions!  I’ll be in touch again soon!
